DO’S AND DON’TS OF HALLOWEEN HAIR: HOW NOT TO RUIN YOUR HAIR WITH YOUR SPOOKY LOOK

DO’S AND DON’TS OF HALLOWEEN HAIR: HOW NOT TO RUIN YOUR HAIR WITH YOUR SPOOKY LOOK

Do you have big Halloween costume goals this year? The perfect costume that will cause people literally to stop you in the streets or at the party to take a picture with you? Halloween is the best time to transform yourself completely, but it can be taxing on your hair. Here are some do’s and don’ts to help you get the picture-perfect costume that doesn’t permanently damage your hair.

DO: REUSE A WIG

Even if your old wig is a bit dirty, you can wash it and reuse it! Mix one part fabric softener to four parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the wig down until it is damp, and then simply brush it to clean out the glitter and gunk from last year’s Halloween party.

DON’T: GO TO BED WEARING SPRAY-ON COLOR

Not only does it potential damage your hair, but it can also stain your fabric on your sheets and pillowcases. Once the spray-on colors sit in your hair for too long, it can cause your hair to become tangled and matted. The last thing you want after a long night of tricks and treats is to spend the morning fighting to comb and wash your hair.

DO: DEFY GRAVITY

Having a hairstyle that defies gravity is one of the best ways to bring a little bit of spooky into your costume. Create a wild or crazy style using a product like Rene Fris’ Styling Matte Paste, which will hold your hairstyle in place all night. Use double the recommended amount to make sure that your hair stays in place.

DON’T: MAKE DRASTIC CHANGES

Only make changes that you are committed to. Think you want to dye your hair green to turn into the Joker? It might be better to do that with a wash-out dye, rather than a permanent dye. Even if the box says that it is a temporary color, it is better to use the colored hairsprays that you see next to the Halloween costumes. They might not be as effective, but you also won’t have to go into work on Friday with semi-green hair.

DO: MAKE TEMPORARY CHANGES

When using the spray-on hair dye, don’t spray it directly onto your hair. Instead, spray your hair with hairspray first. It acts like a primer and helps to protect your hair from drying out.

DON’T: FORGET TO USE CONDITIONER

Your hair is going to need a little extra TLC after a long night of being teased, combed, sprayed, gelled, and pulled. When you get home, make sure that you wash your hair but also give your hair a little extra moisture with your conditioner. Leave it in your hair for twice as long so you can hair can recover. This is a good conditioner to use because it also helps to protect your hair from environmental pollutants. If your hair does get dried out by temporary dye, it can help it bounce back faster.
